List of Filipino boxing world champions

In the Philippines, boxing is only considered a secondary sport behind basketball, despite of the glories and honors it brought to the country, having produced Olympic standouts, professional world champions and some of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. Philippines has yet to win an Olympic gold medal but amateur boxing has given the country more medals in the Summer Olympics than any sport with 5 out of its 9 total medals. On the other hand, professional boxing have produced 36 major world champions (including those of Filipino heritage), one of the most in the world. In an unofficial survey, Philippines are ranked inside the top 10 in the world (led by USA, Mexico and Great Britain) and 4th in Asia (behind South Korea, Japan and Thailand).^. Filipino greats like Pancho Villa, Flash Elorde and Ceferino Garcia are members of the two highly respected boxing hall of fames - IBHOF and WBHF. Thus, giving the Philippines the most number of boxing hall of fame members out of Asia.

Today, Filipino professional boxers are one of the most respected for their aggressive styles and world class talents, with the likes of future hall of famers Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire who are currently The Ring's Pound-for-pound number-one and number-four best fighter in the world respectively.

WBO tasks five-judge panel to review Pacquiao-Bradley By Roy Luarca Philippine Daily Inquirer

Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao outpunches American Timothy Bradley Jr. (left) but still loses his WBO welterweight title at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a highly controversial and unpopular split decision. AFP
There will be no reversal, but the World Boxing Organization still wants to find out whether the three judges at ringside for the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley showdown Saturday night did their job right or bungled it big time.

WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, who sanctioned the bout that unbelievably went Bradley’s way, has assigned five international judges to review the scoring of Jerry Roth (115-113 for Pacquiao), CJ Ross (115-113 for Bradley) and Duane Ford (115-113 for Bradley), according to the Los Angeles Times.

Puerto Rican Nelson Vasquez has been chosen for the panel along with selected judges from New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Their primary task is to review the fight video and take a vote regarding the result that reverberated throughout the world and drew rebuke not only from the sporting community but also from the show biz and political sector.

US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has even joined the bandwagon and is endorsing a probe by the Nevada Attorney General probe to find out whether the battle for the WBO welterweight crown was indeed fraudulently decided.

Reid, whom Pacquiao campaigned for in the 2010 elections, also said he’s bent on reintroducing a boxing regulatory bill that will propose the creation of a National Boxing Commission.

Valcarcel, who gave Pacquiao a diamond ring for being the best fighter of his generation last Thursday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, said: “We want to get the impression of five international judges, but we cannot reverse the decision.”

Meanwhile, Pacquiao told ESPN’s Deportes’ “Golpe A Golpe” on Monday that he’s more inclined to facing old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time in Mexico than a rematch with Bradley on Nov. 10 in Las Vegas.

Marquez, boxing analyst of the program, gave Pacquiao the victory over Bradley, 8 rounds to 4.

Pacquiao heavy favorite vs Mosley in May fight

It didn’t come as a surprise that Manny Pacquiao emerged the heavy favorite to whip Sugar Shane Mosley in their May 7 face-off at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A fighter many believe is way past his prime, Mosley will turn 40 on September 7 or four months after facing Pacquiao in the ring. He is also coming off two unimpressive bouts, against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (a unanimous decision loss), and Sergio Mora (a draw).

No wonder, odds readily tilted on Pacquiao’s side with still a few days left before 2010 ends.

The 32-year-old Filipino boxing champion has been initially installed a 4-1 pick by sports bookies in the U.S., with one online bookie even making Pacquiao a -900 odds, as reported by the Examiner.

5Dimes Sportsbook pegged Pacquiao a 7-4 favorite, meaning a $700 bet on the Filipino southpaw would only yield $100, while a $100 bet on Mosley would earn you $450.

In contrast to Mosley, Pacquiao had been impressive in his previous fights, such as against bigger opponents like Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito in 2010.

The boxing superstar dominated Clottey in their March outing at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas, scoring a unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt.

Then he brutalized the 5-foot-11 Margarito the full 12 rounds at the same Texas stadium on his way to winning the World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight crown, for his eighth world title belt.

But Mosley, who is the only man in history who had beaten the great Oscar De La Hoya twice, is undeterred with his underdog tag. “They think I’m the easier fight, that’s fine with me."

“Pacquiao’s a fighter like me; he comes forward. I promise you, I’ll hit him on the chin. His defense is not that good. The guys who come at me, I knock out," added Mosley.

Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said promotion for the bout will officially kick off in February with a three-city press tour.

The Hall of Fame promoter said Pacquiao and Mosley are set to promote the fight in Los Angeles, New York and Washington, where he hopes to get an audience with President Barack Obama through the help of Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, the Las Vegas Senator whom Pacquiao helped in his reelection campaign in the last election.

And since Mosley will be coming from San Francisco, Arum said the official press conference of the fight is likely to be held in the same city within the Bay Area. – JVP, KY, GMANews.TV

Philippine Azkals to recruit new players

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine national football team will sign new players to boost the Azkals’ lineup, a team official said Monday.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami told ANC that the team’s core members will be the same, but they will be on the lookout for midfielders and strikers who can fill in the gaps.

“We are open to new players. There are talents who want to come over,” he said.

“We will augment… to make sure we will be stronger than we are now. We want to make sure we have other options available, someone to give them surprise when they come over to the pitch,” he added.

The unheralded Azkals, considered as minnows in international football competitions, reached the ASEAN Suzuki Cup (AFF) semifinals for the first time by defeating defending champion Vietnam, 2-0.

The Philippines lost both semi-final games against Indonesia last week, both by a score of 0-1.

The Azkals will next see action in February against Mongolia in the qualifying rounds of the AFF Challenge Cup.

The tie is on a home-and-away format, with the Philippines’ home game to be held either at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod or the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila. –
